Carlsbad, New Mexico (A poem)


The Cacti and Gypsum

A soil bereft of life and nutrients

finds it’s hollow pals in

this barren world. 

The chalky cracked red soil and prickly plant–

a cacti in the Gypsum soil, spreads no love,

but for and with the relationship with the gypsum. 

Oh, the gypsum!

Have you no vitality?

A muddy red–rocks and dust.

Absent of life,

the relationship of the Cacti

and gypsum thrive in this barren world.

The swirls of death and

the tragedy of dearth,

finds its friends in the resilient.

A strong plant has met its match

of darkness, but vital life. 

Oh, the gypsum…
